Lay Monitoring

Lake Rescue and Pauline Lake for several generations of full and part-time Vermonters has been a special place to relax and recreate. And like all natural systems, the lakes today are different than they were 50 or 100 years ago. Some of the changes are a reflection of development on or near the lake and some of the changes are just mother nature doing what she does. However, in the recent decade lake homeowners have taken note of changes that are significantly altering the lake and its use. Specifically, sedimentation in the Round Pond area has extended the Black River Delta considerably and significant sedimentation and weed growth are being observed in others areas of the lake as well. Moreover, the lake has been and will continue to be vulnerable to invasive species such as Eurasian milfoil. The Lake Rescue Association and individual members have now been working for over a decade to address these issues and will continue to do so under an effort now termed Rescue Our Lakes.

The Vermont State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Division of Water Quality has become an important partner in this effort and has provided both guidance and resources in the effort to understand the origin(s) of our problem. Some initial steps to mitigate the sedimentation problem have been made with the assistance of Vermont State, Ludlow, and private individuals. Further mitigation efforts still need to be identified and hopefully the ability to remediate certain areas of the lakes will granted someday.

  1. BulletEurasian Milfoil - First found in Lake Rescue in 1998 but aggressive program has removed the milfoil and monitoring as kept the lake milfoil free since 2003.

  2. BulletLake Water Quality - Since 2005 Lake Rescue has been monitored for nutrients and signs of eutrophication under the VT State Lay Monitoring program and is not in danger of algal blooms.

  3. BulletShoreline Survey

  4. BulletLake Rescue included in a July 2009 report by Eric Howe, PhD Lake Protection Scientist, Vt DEC. which identified some major stressors on the lake and potential mitigation efforts.   Full Report Here

  5. BulletBetter Backroads - Through a series of grants written by LRA members, the Town of Ludlow has secured project funding to reduce road runoff

  6. BulletRescue our Lakes - the LRA has launched an effort to reduce sedimentation in the lakes
